I was thinking about this the other day, surprisingly enough. I wanted to tag songs with things like "Reminds me of Work" and "Whoa, barnight!" and "I made up a dance to this in primary school".

I agree with this. It'd be great to tag music with things like "hardcore" or "beautiful" and have your collection indexed by such tags.

The software could build an external index so you could search by the tags instantly, and also write the tags to the comment section in the ID3, so you wouldn't lose the data if you transferred only the audio file. Alex, I will give you 13 bonus points if you write a Songbird add-on to manage this ;)

iTunes can smart playlist on just about anything, e.g. genre is jazz and comment contains "2008 favourites". Of course you will end up with a ridiculous amount of playlists, but the info will be in the file at least

For me, the term "favourite" doesn't need to be tagged in because i just use a "play count greater than 20" clause. But I guess that isn't as flexible as that info isn't in the file and if I ever moved to another player, i'd lose it all.

So iTunes uses the comment field for that stuff. Interesting.

I only mean to compare as far as the ability to assign completely arbitrary pieces of info to music; obviously there'd be differences in application for photos. But thinking about it further, why? Who's to say that my favourite photos won't change over time? It all depends on the tags one might use.

ID3 has a comment field, and you can create "smart" playlists in itunes based on the comment contents.

I don't see how you can compare photo organisation to music organisation though. Like you said, your taste in music will change over time, but your photos "tags" wont change. You browse your music probably daily, how often are you browsing your photos.
